The Best Road Trips in the World

Taking a long road trip is one of the best ways to explore a country. Unlike taking a guided tour, a road trip gives you the freedom to go where you like, when you like. If you’re the type of person that enjoys adventure then hiring a car and hitting the open road could be the perfect holiday for you!

Certain parts of the world have become very popular for this type of holiday and we thought it would make a great blog post to list some of the best road trips you can take, and let you know what you can see and do along the way. Canadian Rockies (Canada)
The Canadian Rockies are renowned for stunning scenery that many people rate among the best mountain range in the world. As such, it has become very popular with people taking road trips. The most common route is from Calgary to Vancouver (or vice versa), taking in mountain towns like Banff, Jasper and Whistler along the way. Motels and campsites are easy to find as are plenty of great activities such as glacier walks, mountain climbing and white water rafting. One thing’s for sure, you won’t be bored on this trip!

Route 66 (USA)
Route 66 is possibly the most famous highway in America. Stretching all the way from Los Angeles to Chicago you could spend months on this road trip. Most people take in a smaller section of the road, choosing to drive from Los Angeles through to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. From there most people split off up to Nevada taking in the incredible city of Las Vegas before heading back to Los Angeles. If you’re looking for a variety of scenery then this trip is a great option as along the way you’ll travel through mountains, desert and cosmopolitan cities.

Great Ocean Road (Australia)
The great ocean road in Australia transverses the state of Victoria; starting in the city of Melbourne to the small town of Portland. Along the way you’ll travel through some beautiful small fishing towns providing the perfect place to stop for the night. Tourist attractions along the route include the 12 apostles, a magnificent collection of rock stacks that really need to be seen to be believed. Surfing is a big deal along this area of the coast, so if you’re brave enough there’s always plenty of opportunities to get into a wet suit and ride the waves. If you like the idea of a long, windy coastal road then this could be the road trip for you.

The Alps (Europe)
The Alps in Europe offer a varied drive through France, Austria, Switzerland and Italy. The beauty of this trip is that the Alp Mountain range connects four countries, so there’s a great opportunity to experience a variety of European cultures. Highlights along the route include Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. Whilst there, take a trip on the mountain railway to take in some stunning views of the glacier.
