Get Back To Nature in Southern California

Call it unplugging, turning off, or getting back to nature; leaving technology behind for a week, or even a weekend, can be incredibly liberating. Imagine not being tied to your cell phone, iPod or laptop for a few days! Camping is a great way to take a break to the fast-paced life you live. Southern California offers some of the best camping opportunities in the United States; here are ten of the best (in no particular order).

 

1. Mission Bay – San Diego

The park covers 4,600 acres of land and boasts 27 miles of beaches. Two large campgrounds offer guests accommodation while playgrounds, paths and miles of water offer a list of virtually endless activity. 

 
 

2. San Bernardino Mountains and National Forest

It’s hard to choose one ‘best’ campground among the dozens in the area! Over 30 camping areas dot the mountainous landscape offering hiking, fishing, swimming, boating and horseback riding.

 

3. Bolsa Chica State Beach

If you’re traveling by RV, you’re in luck! Bolsa Chica offers RV camping and guests to the park can enjoy hand fishing for California grunion, an experience like none other. Fishing, swimming and hiking enthusiasts will particularly enjoy the park.

 

4. Sequoia National Park

The National Park offers seven separate campgrounds. The main draw of the area is the enormous sequoia trees for which the park is named. Hiking and horseback riding are favorite activities that allow near perfect views of the magnificent trees.

 

5. Kirk Creek and Plaskett Creek

You can’t mention one of these campgrounds without mentioning the other. Set along the Los Padres National Forest coastline, choose Kirk Creek if you want stunning views and don’t mind the occasional blast of ocean wind. Plaskett Creek is a bit further from the shoreline and the huge Monterey pines will shield you from the worst of the ocean’s angst.

 

6. Riverside County Campgrounds

Like San Bernardino, Riverside County offers a plethora of campgrounds to choose from. No matter which park you choose, you’ll have access to miles of hiking trails and easy access to the dozens of wineries in the area.

 

7. Dark Canyon Campground

Located only 8 miles north of Idyllwild city, amenities at the campground include fire rings, picnic tables, hiking, water faucets, vault toilets and a restaurant. Activities nearby include fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding and ATV riding.

 

8. Joshua Tree National Park

Be sure that you don’t stare in amazement at the impressive Joshua Trees for so long that you miss out on activities in the park! Rock climbing, hiking and fishing opportunities abound in this impressive area.

 

9. Mt. Whitney Campgrounds

10. Big Pine and Independence
