5 Classic Driving Roads in California
Post Date: September 13, 2011

With its Mediterranean climate resulting in cool, wet winters and dry summers, its high mountain ranges and Death Valley, the hottest part of the USA, California offers some of the most varied and exciting driving you can imagine. Whether you have a cute little sports car or high-powered muscle machine, it's the perfect state to drop the top, get the wind in your hair and put pedal to the metal. If you're after a suitable vehicle to do these roads justice, netcars.com will inspire and you could pick up a bargain dream machine. You could also rent a great looking car from SNA Auto Rental for the trip. There are many classic driving roads in the Californian state and here are some of the best.
A driver's favorite is the State Route 35, more commonly known as the Skyline Boulevard. The road is part of the California Freeway and Expressway System and the majority of it runs along the ridge of the Santa Cruz mountains. Skyline Boulevard is a popular recreational driving route for sports car owners, motorcyclists and even cyclists. With its fantastic scenic views and winding roadway it gives you both the pleasure of California's epic mountain scenery and the satisfaction of testing your vehicle's handling.
If you have a passenger in tow you can't go far wrong with the beautiful drive along the Coast Highway that runs from Carlsbad to La Jolla in the north of San Diego County. Parts of this route run along the water and there are plenty of gorgeous restaurants to stop at. This is a great route for you to make the most of your convertible car.
If you're heading north of the Golden Gate, you may want to take a trip down Highway 128 west from Highway 101 (Sonoma/Mendocino Counties). The beautiful scenery is second to none and the route takes you out in the direction of the NoCal coast. If you need a break from driving, it's a good road to stop on as some of the best wine tasting in California is in this area. Other excellent driving roads north of the Golden Gate include Highway 175 between Hopland and Lakeport. This is twisting with steep inclines and things can get pretty slippery and icy in the winter.
Another awesome place to take your car is Malibu canyon. There are too many great roads to choose just one (some of the best are to and from the Rock Store) but you'll find they are really fun and similar to the Glendora Mountain Road. The road can get tight so this area is a perfect option if you have a smaller sports car. Another bonus of the Malibu canyon is that you'll probably see more exotic cars per mile than anywhere else in the state.
Finally, for a dose of classic driving, try the Old La Honda road in Woodside, San Mateo County. One of the oldest roads in the area, it is long and winding and popular among car drivers and cyclists alike. Not only does it offer great driving but it is right on the coast and you'll get some stunning views as you cruise.
Whether you want fabulous scenery or a challenging driving experience, California can give you both and more.
