10 Tips for Making Long Distance Car Journeys Fly By
Post Date: February 03, 2012
Most people love travelling in terms of the wonderful places you get to see, and the experiences such trips afford you, but there are plenty of people out there who are not exactly overly enamoured with the actual travelling part of travel! Getting to B is great but the journey from A can be a real drag! This can especially be the case when you are travelling by car, with the landscape passing you by all the time. The best way around this is to make sure you plan ahead with some ideas to help you to get through the journey. Here are a few ideas that can help you to pass the time while you travel by car.
Slow down
This might sound counterproductive, but if you take your time, you will actually find that seeing where you are travelling will pique your interest. If you slow down just a little bit, you can actually take in your surroundings and experience the places that you are just passing through.
Keep an eye out
While you are bemoaning the fact that you have nothing to do but count the minutes and hours before you arrive at your destination, you could focus on your journey and keep an eye out for some unusual sightings. So many parts of the world are full of incredible animals, and an eagle eyed car passenger might just spot some impressive beasts!
Play some games
Games will pass the time in most situations and travelling is no exception. You can engage in a good game of eye spy with nothing more than the contents of the car that you are contained in! Another good game to play is red car blue car. As simple as it sounds, you pick a car colour, and count how many pass you on your journey. Whoever picks the most popular colour wins!
Make a playlist
These days a mix tape just won’t do, unless you manage to travel back in time to 1984! You can put together some great playlists though, and if like most people you have thousands upon thousands of tracks on your iPod or generic mp3 player, then you should be able to put something fairly long lasting together to get you through the journey at hand.
The not so humble mobile phone
We are now reaching the stage whereby if your phone can’t tie your shoelaces for you it is out of date. This is great news though if you are travelling. Your phone can be so much to you and it really will pass the time. From internet browsing to using your favourite apps, you will be hard pushed to find anything that occupies your time better.
The humble book
What must be to some an almost forgotten pleasure, there’s nothing more satisfying then getting stuck into a really good book, and a long distance car journey is the perfect excuse. Find something really good and you might just get through your whole journey without looking up!
Take the scenic route
Your main priority may well be to get somewhere, but if you go via some other interesting places you will really break the journey up. For the sake of a few more hours on the road, you could end up enjoying your trip a whole lot more.
Take the Tablet - or a laptop!
You might not reliably get a decent internet connection while you are on the road, but with thousands of pre-downloadable apps available for both android tablets and the iPad, this is the perfect companion for a long journey. Fire up a film, play some games and when possible, keep in touch with friends to help pass the time. Of course, you can do all of this just as easily on a laptop.
Keep a journal
This is a bit of an old fashioned idea, but a good one to pass the time. You can focus on the minutiae of life as the world passes by, and jot it all down as you go. You might just find that time flies. Either that or you can focus all of your bile on the disappointing length of time it takes to travel anywhere by car!
Sleep!
It might sound a bit silly, but sleeping is the number one best way to pass the time while you are travelling. The phrase ‘gone in the blink of an eye’ has never been so true.
With all of these great ideas, there’s no doubt that any journey you undertake in the near future will just fly by! You will need a pretty big drive just to fit all of these activities in.
